LONDON DOCK FIRE
BIG BLAZE AT POPLAR. ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE. Preea Association—By Telegraph— Copyrigut LONDON, January 8. Tho largest London dock fire for half a century occurred at Poplar, where a largo warehouse stocked with rubber, tea, and other inflammable goods was gutted. Seventy fire engines were present, and they mostly directed their attention to preventing the flames from spreading to the adjoining timber yards, oil stores, and other warehouses. Molten rubber streaming from the burning building blocked the drains, and the narrow streets were soon several feet deep in dirty tepid water. Several exciting escapes are recorded, but there were no casualties. The extent of the damage at present is unknown. A later message states that the dock fire is still burning, but it ts now well in hand. Ten tire engines and 100 firemen are still working, and it is hoped that the flames will be suppressed by the afternoon. The damage is now estimated at over £200,000. The Concordia premises which were completely gutted, were lulled with rubber, tinned goods, and tin. —Keuter.
