Wednesday,' December 19. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Charge of Theft. —Henry Frederick Hornby, aged 17 (Mr Neill) pleaded guilty to the theft of £l9 Its 9d, the property of the Evening Star Company (Limited).—Detective Beer, in asking for a remand, stated that accused bad admitted that the whole amount involved was £143 119 9d, but that the present defalcations totalled £B6 2s 6d. He sought a remand, because the books, of which accused had been in charge, had to be examined.—Accused was remanded until Monday next, and bail was allowed of £SO in himself and one surety of £SO. ' Obscene Language.—Daniel Goodman, for whom Mr B. S. Irwin appeared, pleaded guilty to having used obscene language in Harrow street.—Senior-sergeant Mathieson said that the accused had used disgusting language in the presence of females, and also in tho presence of Constable Kearton. Numerous complaints had been received by the police regarding his conduct while under the influence of liquor, and he had been bound over to keen the pence. On one occasion he had thrown a saucepan at tho head of a woman living nearby.—Mr Irwin said that the accused had been living with a woman named Walker, with whom he had quarrelled, and she had said that she would have him in gaol before Christmas. The accused had been assisting her in this by getting drunk.—The Senior Sergeant said that there were present several constables who would swear that the accused had not lived with Mrs Walker, against whose charao. ter there was nothing.—Mr Irwin: How could they swear to that unless they have more elastic consciences than they should have as members of tho police force?—The Magistrate said that the case wi...s a very bad one. The accused had had a previous warning when bound over, and a strong stand must ho taken against the use of language of that sore. He would be sentenced "to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labour.
