SPORTING.

DUNEDIN SUMMER MEETING. The long spell of dry weather has naturally resulted in making the grass tracks at Wingatui rather harder than trainers desire. There is, however, a fairly good sole of grass on the course proper near the inside rails, and - this will help to keep the sting out of the going. A good heavy tall of rain would be very welcome. So far none of the intending visitors to the meeting have put in an appearance at Wingatui, hut at this time of the year they are generally forced., to- come .earlier .than at .o^her . meetings, bedanse the''Railway. Department--as reluctant to carry stock whilst the holiday traffic is heavy. Yesterday morning several horses got through useful work in. prepare tidn for their engagements et the meeting, and some few wore out before breakfast, which is rather unusual for Wingatui. For the first time- in the history of, the course tlid; ’ witnessed a gallop <jn the inside dL th i ©‘ , '-'iouTSe proper. The Inside'' of'the course is strictly ’ reserved for racing except perhaps for- a ispecial .gallop, Which is invariably a ..stable sijcrpt.' ’ It .is generally recognised that yonhg horses, particularly two-year-olds, if continuously worked . and, galloped on the outride of ' a trackj exhibit a' strong tendency to travel wide, according to acquired-custom, in their races. It was for this reason that permission was sought and, obtained to gallop some two-voir-blds from the four-furlong barrier and finish down the inside-rails. Bachelor Gayy All Style, and the'.Gay .Dew> colt'me B. M‘Donald’s stable were taken to the barrier, and after making them acquainted with the usual procedure which .takes place at rue post before a race, they were sent away in good line. The Heather Dew colt was smartest on his legs, but Bachelor Gay soon took charge, and led to the turn where he ran wide. He came on fairly wide out, whilst the Heather Dew youngster, followed by-All Style, moved - up. ■ In the run home Bachelor Gay beat the colt by nearly two lengths, whilst All Style was • about four lengths away. The winner ran the distance in a tick over 53sec. Bachelor Gay ahd the colt carried about even weights, whilst the filly, who -had G. Feilding up, was giving them apparently about. 211 b, or perhaps a bit more'. ’ The trio represent stock by Gay Lad, and they,’ particularly Bachelor Gay,, who bores out, should benefit by the experience. .Failing permission to run. youngsters around 'the heme turn and along the rails a somewhat similar experience could be obtained by sending them away from the mile post, and so obtain an absolutely straight half-mile, along the back. All the rest of the fast work took place on the plough gallop. All British and Baricon travelled six furlongs in ’ Imin 19 3-ssec. Mantua and Red Admiral cantered a circuit, and breaking away together, came home from the six-furlong peg in Imin 18 4-ssecr—-the mare travelling nicely. Wenslcydale was shaping a bit better than Cartoon in a working gallop over six furlongs, which occupied Imin 22sec. Markby and Beauty Sight were not fully extended when . covering a half in 54sec. Prompter did steady work, and was then. treated to a short sprint along the back stretch. Silent King strode over a couple of circuits at half pace. Taboo and Bfocarte sprinted three furlongs along the back in 37 3-ssec, and Incursio broke 53sec in a half-mile sprint. Eaton Bella, Valdamo, General Advance, St. Augustus, King' Sol, Red Sol, Gunlayer, Bonnie Lake, and a few others were allotted lenient tasks. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.
