A strange rose bush has been grown in New Plymouth by Mr J. Down (says the Taranaki Herald). It is of the tea-scented variety, with fairly large flowers. In addition to the usual stamens, the centre of each flower bears a green growing shoot; bn which are buds which presumably come to maturity as the shoots develop. The effect is a kind of two-story flower, the stem of the first. flower pushing on through the centre and bear ing other flowers above the first one. This is a not uncommon freak to be noticed on a single branch, but in this case it is reported that the whole bush is affected. The thing could become very interesting if the buds on the growing shoots should become flowers and b have in the same manner, allowing shoots to push through them and develop buds in their turn. How far would it go?
FURS FOR CHRISTMAS. SUITABLE GIFTS. Opportunity should be taken of Madame Menere’s sample furs in Dunedin to secure them as Christmas gifts. No article could bind the giver in more loving remembrance to the recipient. “Magnificent” is the one word that could be applied to them—they represent styles which have never been seen out here before, and which, in fact, are the forerunners of the coming season’s styles of London, Paris, and New York. They are on view at Savoy Buildings, corner Princes street and Moray place.—Advt.
