CAROL SERVICES.

A very inspiring carol service was held in the Octagon Hall last evening in connection with' tne Methodist Central Mission, 'the hall was crowded to excess. 3?he service was conducted by the Rev. VV. Walker. An augmented choir of over 60 voices, under the baton of Mr James Paterson, rendered selections from the “Messiah,” the soloists being Mrs Astley Black, Mrs George Scott, Mr G. Stuart Thompson, and Mr .W. 'N. Satterthwaite, each of whom rendered their items very acceptably. Mr C. A, Martin, who kindly arranged the whole service,- presided at the organ with his customary ability. The Rev. W. Walker extended the thanks’ of the mission to all who had assisted in such a successful Christmas service, and wished all his hearers the season’s compliments. The total collections for the day were over £6O, including a retiring collection, liberally responded to, on behalf of the poor and needy of the city and the Methodist Orphanage. A large congregation assembled at the United Congregational Church last evening on the occasion of the Christmas musical service. The Rev. A. H. Wallace delivered a message appropriate to the season, and the choir, 40 strong, rendered an impressive programme of music, which included “Come, Ye Gentiles” (Bairstow), “Christ, Ho Lieth in Yonder Cot” (Alcock), “Good King Wenceslas,” “Star of Bethlehem” (Plant), “Fear Ye Not, O Israel” (Roberts), “Hymn of Creation” (Haydn), “And the Glory of the Xiord” (Handel), and “Hark, Hark, My Soul” (Shelley). Solo work was contributed by Miss Alice Wilkinson (“ Come Unto Him”), Miss Doris Zaffer, Miss May Dryden, and Messrs G. Dyer (“Nazareth”), H. Abernethy, and D. Dryden. The choir was conducted by Mr W. R. Sinclair,' Mr Ron. Abernethy presiding at the organ.
