Mr W.' R. Gordon was a passenger for the south by Thursday’s express. Mr W. I. Bolam, of Christchurch, ia at present on a visit to Dunedin. Mr Donald M’Alister, Inspector of Taxes for the Shanghai Municipal Council, arrived in Dunedin on Thursday on his periodical holiday leave. It is many years now since the ex-Dunedinite left for the East. Professor Richard Lawson, of the Melbourne University, who has been appointed to the Chair of Education at the Otago University, will take over his duties at the opening of the next term. Professor Lawson should arrive here about the end of February. A Blenheim Press Association message .reports the death of Mr J. A. R. Greensill, cf Picton, aged 84. The deceased, who was a son of Majot Greensill. was born at Haulbowline Island, Cork Harbour, and came to Nevy Zealand in the ship Oriental in 1856, landing at Nelson. He later went to Marlborough, and was a member of the old Provincial Council, on various occasions being mayor of Picton. He was a keen bowler. Deceased was a cousin of the late Lord Roberts. Prior to her departure for a three months' trip to Australia, Madame Newcc-mfce Hall was entertained by a host of pupils and friends in Kroon’s Hall on Thursday night. On behalf of the assemblage Mr Kosevenr asked Madame Hall’s acceptance of a handsome wristlet watch and a big box of chocolates, and, in doing so, made some very flattering remarks concerning the recipient, who briefly but suitably replied.' A -.W'mt evening in the f form of a social and dance was held in the schoolroom of Mount Cargill School to welcome the return of Mr and Mrs Souquet ana their daughter from their visit to France. The chair was taken bv Mr Leslie. The proceedings opened with the National Anthem, and a cordial welcome was extended to Mr and Mrs Souquet find their daughter bv the chairman on behalf of those present. Songs were contributed by Mrs Moss, Messrs Leslie. Stokes. Moss, and Cook; dances by Miss Eileen M'Carthy; recitations by Misses Eileen and Dorothy M’Carthy; several humorous items by Mr M‘Carthy; and a sextet by members of the Post_ and Telerraph Department. .After a brief interval Mr pn”qnet "ivo an interesting account of his visit to the battlefiel dof France, and concluded oy singing the Marseillaise.
