THE WINTON SHOW.

FINE DISPLAY OF STOCK. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. (Feom Oub Special Kepobi-eb.) INVERCARGILL, December 7. The eleventh annual show of the VVinton A. and P. Association was held to-day in beautiful weather. This was the first time in the history of the association that the show has been held on a day on which no rain fell It is true that a fairly strong north wind was in evidence during the greater part of the day, but this was not unpleasant. There was a large attendance —probably a record for the association —and tho sum of £IOO 8s was token at the gate, compared with £7l 8s last yea>y AVben it is considered that a member’s ticket admits a member, his wife, and all the members of his family it can reasonably be estimated at qui a 5000. Tho entries, too, were voocl all over, and showed an increase in practically every section. The management of the show was in excellent hands. Air AA’alter Blakie, of Branxholm, the president of the society, was early on tho ground, and kept a* vigilant oversight on matters generally. H© was ably assisted by a committee, the members of which were keenly alive to their respective dutiesMr J. A. Broom was an energetic and painstaking secretary and left no stone unturned to make tbe show the success it undoubtedly was. The draught horse classes in some instances were not too well filled, but the quality was nevertheless good. In entires, any age, Mr A. Cassin’s Finest Blend beat his opponent with comparative ease, and in yearling colts Airs Adams and Son (Spar Bush) came first with a particularly nice animal, and Messrs AValter Blakie and Sons annexed tho blue ticket with a good quality beast which will probably be hoard of during the next year or two. Messrs AV. Blakie and Sons had matters all their own way in other classes with some excellent specimens of the Clydesdale breed In the working classes -this firm was equally successful, some specially fin© stamps of geldings being shown. The thoroughbred and trotting classes were indifferently filled, but the roadster section attracted a fine display of good hacks, cobs, and ponies. The, most successful exhibitors were Miss G. E. Fisher (Rimu), Mi: Andrew Cartwright (Waianiwa), and Mr AV. Kennedy. The cattl© section was an unusually comprehensive one, and included not a few goed specimens of the breed sought to be represented. In Shorthorns Mr Jas. S. Anderson and Mr Alexander Anderson divided the honours. Tho female championship was allotted to Mr Jas. 8. Anderson with Countess Blythe, who was sired by Riccarton Blythe from Lady Mona. Mr Jas. ,S. Anderson’s Melba XII had no opposition in the three-year-old heifers’ class. This heifer was awarded the championship at Invercargill, and continues to improve in quality. The championship in bulls went to Mr Alex. Anderson’s Fair View Earl, by Riccarton Blythe out of Reby Duchess XXXII. He is a massive and stylish bull. There was a good ring of yearling bulls, of which Mr Jas. S. Anderson’s two entries were specially good and took the red and the blue tickets respectively, Mr A. M. Weir fudged the Ayrshire*, and. generally speaking, ho was pleased with the exhibits which came under his notice. Mr G. R. Herron’s entries, which were so successful in Dunedin last week tried conclusion with Mr A. E. Cocker’s exhibits. In the class for cows in milk Mr A. E. Cbcknr won in a class of six with Birchwood Mack 11, which was champion at tho Otautau Show this year, and won the special prize for the best type of milking cow on the ground there. Mr H. S. Irving (Roslyn Bush) won in the two-year-old heifer class with Birchwood Selection, her dam being Queen Alary. She was said by the judge to be a fine -type of commercial heifer—in fact, just the'cinss of beast that Ayrshire breeders are looking for. This heifer was deservedly selected for_ charnoionship honours. In the tn«e division Air Herron’s tiyo-year-old Rising Star won the championship ribbon with thebull which earned for him a similar honour in Dunedin last week. The Bainfield herd was well represented In the Friesian section with some excellent specimens of the black and whites, and it secured all the awards with the exception of that in aged bulls and the male championship, both of. which honours went to Mr Hugh Stewart wi(;h a bull of Mr Hunt’s breeding. This bull has a great butter-fat record, and has only been beaten once in tho show ring.. He has now won tho- Waitaki Dairy Company’s cun outright. There were some good milking Shorthorns forward. Mr R. _J. Anderaoh (Kauana) had a good win in an excellent ring of milch cows, all of which, in the opinion of the judge, Mr Roherfj Read, of lAshley, Canterbury, were quite fit for exhibition in any show ring in the dominion. In his opnion tho winner would have annexed tne red ticket in phristchurch had she been shown there. There was a fine ring of yearling heifers, and Mr Pead said it was a very open _ question as to which of the four was entitled to the red Jacket. Condition on the day gained premier honours for Mr John Bateman. Four aged bulls were shown,’ the red ticket and championship honours going to Mr Bateman’s exhibit. which has a splendid show Career and has only been beaten once. A ring of 10 yearling bulls faced the judge, and they were a very fin© class. There was practically nothing between five, and the judge was under the necessity of awarding five tickets. Mr Bateman won with a bull which gained first honours in Christchurch, Otautau, and Gore. He is bv Sunbeam out of Giosv Bell. , In the cottar’s cow class Mr David York won with a cow which gained the championship in Jerseys. Some excellent, sheep were shown, roost of them being well brought, although some of them bom unmistakable ©vid-mce of the severity of the winter. _Mr R. J. Anderson exhibited some magnificent specimens of the Bord-w Leicester breed, and won the championship in rams. Tn ram hoggets Mr Anderson _ took the first and second tickets with nice sheen, and in aged ewes Mr AA r . Kennedy scored over Mr Anderson and won the championship. Tn Romneys Mr Anderson and Mr Kennedy again crossed swords, each ■ winning a championship. Mr Anderson’s champion ewe was a true type of Ron-rosy, end carried a very fine fleece of wool. Her ears, however, were n trifle short. M- AV. Kennedy was the on'v exhibitor in Shropshire*. H outhdowns. and English Leicester'’, and brought forward some really good sheep. Tn the fat 1-rnb class©* sn-ne splendid. animals were shown hv At> W. Falconer, who stromrlv to the association the neces-sit-r of having separate classes for the Down and open wool sheen. D*irv produce end hakimr attracted a good de*l of ettention. end in some of the elasse* of the latter section competition was vrw keen. The following is the Prize-list; TTODC!T?q draughts'.
