EXTENSION OF THE TOWN BELT. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The letters which have appeared in ycur columns on this subject make interesting reading, and the claims they advance seem so fair and reasonable that one cannot quite sec why the council refused the offer made. It is admitted that there are two sides to every question, but sometimes the other side is not up to much, and it would be of interest to the ratepayers to know why the council was recommended to take tho course of action which has been adopted. It can scarcely be credited that the chairman of the Reserves Committee (Mr J. H. Hancock), whose keenness for the extension cf playgrounds and beauty spots is proverbial, would sanction the refusal unless tho reports from the council’s experts were against it. Since reading the initial letter I have made iuquiiios, and am informed that the portion of the property purchased by Mr Grey, which faces the road, and also a further portion, to which a new road will be constructed, are being subdivided into building allotments. To .enable the drainage from this new street to be properly treated it is necessary that a right-of-way carrying the sewer should bo constructed through the corner of the proposed reserve, ami this work tho council has been asked to perform, receiving as quid pro quo the area of hush mentioned. All other work in- regard to the drainage of the new street must bo borne by the proprietor. To my mind, therefore, tho matter is narrowed down to this: Is the area offered worthy of retention as a reserve? And is the cost of the work proposed in excess of the value of the laud and the bush as an additional recreation reserve for the city? There can be no doubt of the affirmative answer to the first question. The second must Ire definitely answered by the council. I hope that the offer will be re-submitted to the council and a full report from the engineer and the superintendent of reserves bo called for. Wo are as a community spending money in tree-planting to remedy past errors. Surely we will keep the iixc. and the fire stick from this beauty spot.—l am, etc., Stlvam.
