December 7. The race meeting was like any other country function of the kind, but it ran a novel kind of totalisator, which was a blackboard placed high up on posts. One man took the cash at the foot of the posts, and the other “tallied” the investments on the board. It was remarkable that the tally clerk never fell off his perch as he had to have a long reach and be on the alert to catch the beta when the ush was on. The race meeting usually brought a lot of strangers, many of whom had to sleep in the hotel stables. A little they was attached to one of the public houses, a man being told off to mark the games. At times be and his partner were said to coin money as the games would go on tall all hours of the evening.
