SIXTY YEARS AGO FROM THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1863.

A very pretty game has just been played out ir. tho General Assembly. By dint of a combination of political and personal interests, a question of the utmost consequence to (he most important section of the colony has been very unsatisfactorily decided. Tho question of removing the scat of Government os an alternative to the separation of tho two islands has at last received a solution, which we are sure will fail to satisfy either North or South. The removal of the seat of Government is of course tho only measure, short of separation, at all calculated to meet the demand for more efficient government. It was the last card in the hands of tho anti-Separatists, and wo have scon how, by the aid of easy confederates, it has been played. The ambition .of Wellington appears in a. fair way of being gratified, and the Wellington party have to thank the Otago members, or at least some of' them, for the boon. Clothe the proceedings in this matter in whatsoever garb we may, there can be little doubt of the real intention. Had it been openly mooted that Wellington was to be made ‘ the centre of authority, the proposition would have been defeated, so in order to enlist the hones and ambition of the Nelson and Marlborough members the matter -was left sufficiently vague to hold nut a bait of ultimate success to each candidate for the coveted honour. But no one is so Hind as not to see tho direction to which the question of removal points. And we are not _so hoodwinked by the pompous parade of impartiality mo.de by tho supporters of Mr Domett’s resolution as to anticipate any other choice but* that of Wellington as the future seat of the Government. . .
