M. MAURICE! BARRES.

The death is announced of M. Maurice Barres, the distinguished litterateur and Nationalist politician.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
3VT. Maurice Barres, who was a member of the French Academy, was born at Charmes-sur-Moselle in 1862. He was elected a Deputy for Paris in 1889. In early life M. Barres studied law, but he preferred to devote himself to literature, and was a prolific writer on literary subjects, the war, and on various characteristics of the French nation.
SIR WILLIAM MACKENZIE.
OTTAWA, December 5
The death is announced of Sir William Mackenzie, president of the Canadian North Railway.—Sydney Sun Cable.
Sir William Mackenzie was bora at Kirkfield, Ontario, in 1849. He was a member of the firm of Messrs Mackenzie, Mann and Co., and occupied the position of President of the Canadian Northern RailwavTor a number of vears. Sir William Mackenzie, who was keenly interested in the activities of the St. John Ambulance, was created a knight in 1911.
