MAIN TRUNK EXPRESS.
Mishap Near Taihape. Wagon Falls Over Bank. GUARD SEVERELY INJURED. (Feb United Press Association.) TAIHAPE, December 6. A mishap occurred on the railway about seven miles north of T&ihape, whereby a guard was severely injured, several wagons were smashed, and minor damages were caused to the Main Trunk express. A goods train leaving Taihape at 11 o’clock last night was compelled to cross a goods train from tire north at Ngaurukehu. The Taihape train backed into a siding, which was not long enough to accommodate it. The guard’s van forcibly struck the stops, and with several wagons, it toppled down 15ft on to the. main line. Guard' J. M'Carthy (who was in the van) was injured, and was taken later in a special train to the Taihape Hospital. The line was cleared to permit the ex- « press (duo at Taihape at 6.50 this morning) to pass. The engine and van, while passing, shook down wreckage, which struck the passenger cars, smashing windows and splintering woodwork along half its length. Luckily no personal injury was inflicted. The express arrived at Taihape an hour late.
