CONFERENCE OF MOTORISTS.
RULE OF THE BOAD. EDUCATING THE PUBLIC. (Pkb United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 30. The New Zealand motorists’ conference opened to-day. Delegates were present from the North and South Island Associations Mr Hawkes (Canterbury) was elected chairman. Resolutions were passed urging the Government to introduce a Motor Vehicle Bill next session that the keep to the left” rule for pedestrians should be made universal throughout the dominion, and suitable regulations included in the Police Offences Act. It was decided that the Education Department bo asked to initiate an essay competition on the rule of the road, with special reference to keeping to the left on footpaths. Mr Edwards moved that the system of giving road signals by drivers be made umform throughout New Zealand. T-his was adopted. ' . It was decided to approve of the signals adopted by the Automobile Association of Great Britain. Mr Wilson moved that it bo a recommendation to the Government that the width of loads on heavy vehicles be restricted to Pft instead of 10ft as at present. The mover said that this width would not impose hardship on the wool growers. —The motion was carried. It was decided to recommend that the width of loads on passenger vehicles be not greater than bin beyond the width of the hull cap on the wheel. A further motion that the laden weight of vehicles should he not greater than 10 tons unless under special license was carried. It was decided to forward a recommendation to the Municipal Conference to the effect that all parking places should be well lighted. The mover added the recommendation that there should be three lights to a chain. It was agreed to recommend that the use of the spotlight be restricted to fall within 75 yards of the front of the car, and on the loft side of the centre of road only. A colour route scheme was deferred for consideration at the next conference. It was resolved that, subject to the formation of a New Zealand Motorists’ Conference, and its affirmation at the next annual meeting of the New Zealand Automobile TJnion, the union change its name to the North Island (New Zealand) Automobile Union, and at each conference the secretary in the island in which the conference is held wilt b e the secretary of the conference.
