ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT.

The Orchestral Society’s fourth concert of the season will bo given in His Majesty's Theatre on Friday next. It will mark a fitting climax to a successful year, both musically and from n subscribers’ point of view. A glance at the numbers sot clown for performance by (he society will assure patrons of a musical treat, and Mr Coombs is confident that a splendid interpretation will be given of the various items. Schubert’s Symphony in E Minor will he the principal work played. Few symphonies present such a wealth of beautiful melody from opening bar to finale, and the closing Andante movement in particular is full of grace and charm. Mendelssohn’s “Fingal’s Cave” overture holds a high place in music literature, and is in sharp contrast in melody and conception to “The Bartered Bride” overture by Smetana, which will be repeated by request. A fine selection of Gounod’s “Faust,” embracing many airs from the favourite opera, will give pleasure to all who love this composer’s popular work. Mr Phil Palmer, one of Dunedin’s most promising ’cello players, will play Popper’s “Tarantollc,” and contribute to completing a programme of delightful variety. The assisting vocalists will bo Miss Florence Gardner and Mr W, J. Renton, and the society is fortunate in ' having secured the services of two singers whose appearance will bo looked for with much pleasure and interest. Miss Gardner’s items include the aria “0 don fatale” from “Don Carlos” (Verdi). Mr Renton has selected “The Curfew” (Gould) as one of his numbers. The box plan will open at the Bristol on Tuesday morning for subscribers, and on Thursday for non-subscribers.
