PLUNKET SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the committee of tlie Loyal New Zealand Society lor tno Health ol Women and Cnildren was held in the Plunket Looms yesterday. There were present Mesdarues M'George (in tlie chair), Iheomiu, L'unninghame, Leslie, Cleghorn, Joitn Watson, T. Brown, T. K. Bidey, Arundel, Isaacs, MKibfcin, Clappertun, O’Neill, Mandeno, the Misses Low, Joachim, Patrick, and the secretary. Apologies were received Irorrv Mesdames Johnstone, tihand, G. it. Ritchie, Sydney iNoili, Herbert, Jackson, T. C. M‘George, Kister Nora, and .Miss Rawson. The matron of the Karitane-Harris Hosipital reported as follows for the month of (October: —Number of patients in hospital on September 30 —mothers 3, babies 16; Humber of patients admitted for treatmentmothers 6, babies 13; number of patients discharged—mothers 7, babies 16; numbei of patients in hospital on October s'o——3, babies 15; largest number in on any one day—mothers 3, babies 17. 01 Sthu mothers and babies admitted four were admitted from Dunedin and suburbs, 1 from East Taieri, and 1 from Auckland. Of the babies admitted 7 were from the Dunedin district, 1 from Green Island, and 1 iroin Pu rekarekai. There are 12 Plunket Hursesi in training. Nurses Rogers, Caldwell, and Mulcock began a course of Plunket training during the month. There are 11 ■Karitane nurses in training. Karitane Nurse Armstrong finished a course of training , and Nurse Westwood commenced a course of training during the month, blister Bovin was relieved for a month’s holiday by Sister Mitchell. On October 2 two teachers and 30 school girls from the Albany Street School visited the _ Karitane-Harris Hospital, when demonstrations and simple explanations were given in regard to the care of the normal baby. The home science students finished their course of training at the hospital during the month. On October 11 the Karitane nurses gave a demonstration to 1000 girls in Burns Hall (Health Week). Dr Derrick (Thames) attended the hospital for five days to gain practical knowledge of the methods carried out there before leaving for England. Visitors during the month numbered 116. Gifts were received from Mcsdamcs A. Barnett and Theomin. The Plunket nurse's for north and central districts reported as under for the month of October: —Number of babies on the list, 658 ; number of babies breast-fed (including partly). 185; number of new cases for the month (babies only). 47; number of neto babies breast-fed (including partly), 25; number of visits paid to homes. 433; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, Stuart street —adults 233. babies 164; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, Roslyn—adults 68. babies 75; advice given to expectant BTTithers. 2; number of bottles of humanised milk sent out from Taieri Dairy, 7575. The Plunket nurse for South Dunedin district reported for the month of October: Number of babies on the list. 228: number of babies breast-fed (including partly), 78; lumber of new case? for the month (babies only), 16; number of new babies breast-fed [including partly). 13: advice given to expectant mothers. 2: number of visits paid ;o homos. 240; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, King Edward street, Spulh Dunedin —adults 140. babies 130. Visits were said to outstations as follows;—Mosgiel 5, Vbbotsford 7. Green Island 4. Burnside 5, Ravensbourne 3. Burkes 3, and Port Chalmers 5. Tine Plunket nurses reported ;hat whooping cough was prevalent during lie month, also that (here -were several ;ascs of measles among the babies. It was reported that arrangements had xen made for a room at 125 Highgatc, Senlyn, to be used as a Plunket room on Monday and Thursday afternoons.
