MEDICAL CONGRESS
DIPHTHERIA AND DIABETES. AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS’ VIEWS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, November 15. (Received November 15, at 8.30 p.m.) The Medical Congress dealt with diphtheria and insulin. Regarding the former statistics were submitted showing that of 7000 throats examined 1.6 per cent, were found to be carriers, while a further test disclosed that half of those examined were susceptible to diphtheria. No child who had been fully immunised had been subsequently attacked by the disease. In reference to insulin it was stated that the dietetic management of a diabetes patient treated with insulin was just as essential as before its introduction. Large doses were disapproved. The present prices of the drug were considered prohibitive for the treatment of poor people. Tire efficacy of some of the insulin produced in Australia was questioned owing to its inert condition. Dr de Crespigny stated that experiments of giving insulin by the mouth instead of by an injection had proved ineffective. ' - - ... RIVAL TO INSULIN. AMERICAN EXPERIMENTS. PHILADELPHIA, October 30. Experiments with a mysterious dm" which may rival insulin as a cure for diabetes and other diseases, have started. Twenty students are acting as experimental subjects. The tests will last 60 days. The drug is known simply by the letter “X.” It is said to he 100 veal’s old, and had been almost forgotten, when its curative value was rediscovered.
