“THE GREAT WHITE SOUTH.”
NEW CHEAP EDITION. MB PONTING’S PICTURE GALLERY. (Fbom Oue Owm Correspondent.) LONDON. October 5. When the announcement was made that a cheap edition of Mr Herbert G. Ponting’a “The Great White South’’ was to be published, one had a vision of this volume printed on inferior paper and the beautiful photographs- greatly depreciated for this reason. Unless one has the original edition and the one now published by Messrs Duckworth and Co. at 7s 6d side by side the inferiority of the latter is not readily noticeable. Coloured prints certainly appear in the original edition. All those in the cheaper edition are black ink. Nevertheless, the illustrations, of which there is such a wealth, are well printed on highly glazed paper. It is a truly magnificent collection of Antarctic scenes, and all those who have had only the pleasure of reading a borrowed volume will now be in the position to possess one of their own, for it is a book
which, is not sufficing unless it is ready at hand in one’s own shelves to take up at any odd moment. • r • It will be remembered that Mr-Pouting had the opportunity to make careful and detailed study of the animal and bird- life of the Southern Seas, and though he touches on the various treks which constituted, tha more serious and tragic eidc of the expedition, his was the duty to present to. tha world the more picturesque eide of life ia the. Great White South. In consequence it is a work that appeals to the oldest and the youngest.
