A PENTATHLON COMPETITION. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, November 8. _ The British Olympic Association, in Order to encourage versatility in sportsmanship, is organising a pentathlon competition at the 1924 Olympiad in •which the competitors from the different countries must run three miles across country, swim 300 yards, ride a horse five miles over fair hunting country, fence, and shoot a revolver with both hands. Training centres for the event have been established in seven cities.— A. and N.Z. Cable. In Greek antiquity a pentathlon was an athletic contest in which each contestant participated in five different events, such as leaping, wrestling, throw ing the discus, and throwing the spear.
