Writing on 21st September. 1923, the London correspondent of the Otago Daily Times reports, inter alia:A somewhat disturbing letter by Air Otto Hehner was published in the London Times yesterday. This calls attention to the cumulative effect bn the ..human system of minute quantities of insidious ' poisons or physiologically active substances used as preservatives in foods and cheap prinks. For instance, cheap, artificial, ‘temperance" beverages contain salicylic or benzoic acid or sulphur dioxide. Seven grains to the pint are . required for effective preservatisation. For the last 50 years Thomsons have been drawing the attention of the public to these injurious adulterations through the columns of this paper.
