ATLANTIC SALMON.
NO PROVISION IN LICENSES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, November 8. The point mentioned the other day about the present fishing- licenses not providing for the taking of Atlantic salmon has been confirmed by the Marine Department. At present those anglers who fish for these salmon are doing so without authority. As the matter is in the experimental stage, however, it is not intended to alter the present licenses or to interfere with anglers who desire to fish for the salmon. The question may arise whether or not it will be advisable for the Government to issue special licenses at a small fee for salmon fishing, hut the general impression seems to be that this would bo inadvisable. The question whether there should bo discrimination in regard to tourists who come out specially for such fishing may also crop up. Now Zealanders visiting the Mother Country cannot get salmon fishing without paying dearly for it, and possibly there would he no objection on the part of salmon fishers who came to New Zealand paying a special license to indulge in the sport here. The question is one that might very well he considered by the Acclimatisation Societies with a view to getting a consensus of opinion on the whole quest ion.
