WIRELESS CONCERT.

There was a good attendance in the George Street School Hall on Thursday night, when a wireless concert was received from Mr F.J. O'Neill’s broadcasting station 4Y.A. The Chairman (Mr John Gray) mentioned that concerts of that nature were as yet a novelty to Dunedin people. That one had been promoted for the purpose of raising funds for the Dunedin North and Leith Amenities Society, which had been formed •ome time ago with the object of beautifying the north end of the city. It was to be hoped that a sufficient sum would be . raised for this scheme of improvement. Already, he said, negotiations were in progress for the formation of playing grounds and lawn tennis and croquet courts as well as a howling green, and the proceeds of the concert would do much to assist in that direction. He mentioned, in conclusion, that the concert would not only be heard in the George Street Hall but also throughout New Zealand and Australia and in the Indian Ocean. An extensive programme was broadcasted, ami was heard clearly, through the medium of a magna vox, by everyone in the hall. The violin selections came through well, and the singing, especially by the male voices, was very clear also. During an interval in the ' programme a few words were spoken by Mr V. Drew, secretary of the Y.M.C.A.,' who referred to the coming exhibition, when Dunedin would have thousands of visiters from all parts, who would, as a result of the improvements, take iU'. , ay with them verv favourable impressions of the beauty of Dunedin. It remained foi everyone to assist in the work of town improvement and not expect a few to carry it on. The following was the programme:—Songs —Misses R. Ritchie, Romeril, C Reed L) Slentiford, D. Ross, L. Monk, I>. O’Neill’ Messrs C. G. Drummond, Lome, H. Hamillor- her -'faster M. Fraser; cornet solo, Mr Thomas; bass flute solo, Master Davie; violin solos—Miss Anna Briasco, Messrs A. J. Frye and Stuart Morrison; concertinn, solo, Mr Kenford; recitation, Miss IN. Osborne. Madame Reggiardo and Mrs J. Moloney played the accompaniments, and the operators at the hall were Messrs R. Bruce and O. Oan?pbe3h SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE SHEDS. TO Till! EDITOB. K- * :iE -— At last the City Council has listened ~h. another complaint respecting (he smoke nu isanco from the engine shed,-. 1W vthv wan’ f°r .Christchurch to make a move’ ■iho position in Dunedin is 10 iimes worse than in Christchurch. The nuisance here is right W the city and affects thousands Only on I Tuesday evening at 6.30 the smoke was so dense* that the players on ihe Ovd could not even see to bowl a cricket bail This is no _ exaggeration. How tin’s sort of thing affects the ccniimmitv can easily be seen! Health Week has come and gone but not a word as to this menace, wiiTh is easily the worst danger Dunedin has at the present lime. A public school N badly affected by it. thereby lessening tinchances for good healthy children This j‘ s a chance of a lifetime for the, council to improve Duredin and assist householders If this sinokt came from any private com corn it would not be tolerated. Then whv should the Covernmcnt be allowed to inflict this imsanco day and night? There is absolutcy no hope that (he Railways Depart met- will admit it is a nuisance and injurious to beahh. Even the holly heih-e planted >S Mr Tanned: opposite (lie sjicTls will no grow because of the thick coating of see upon the trees. How must, this affect residents and the greater part of the 'cpulation of Dunedin? It is really sedulous to think that our councillor's h..c not acted before this. I really think '.at this smoke is such a real curse that (Hniedin citizens can demand its extinction ’ removing the sheds. J -innerelv tharik Cr .Shacklock for opening up the. subject. I now wait and see what Cr Sineoek will do in Ihe matter. I wish him every success —I am, etc., , T - W. Dobbie. 16 Vark terrace, November 8. YOUNG PEOPLE’S YEAR. TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—During the present year a great deal of attention has born drawn lo the importance of specialising in all departments of work amongst (he young. The Mayor expressed his opinion that the hope of the League of Nations lies with the children. By the holding of the recent Children's Exhibition enthusiastic laymen have shown their interest in child welfare and m the religious instruction of the young; yet what pathetic reading it is to see by the report „of the head master of the George Street "School, in to-day’s paper, that the Bible classes have not been successful tin’s year "owing to the frequent absence of some of the ministers.” When will some of our paid religions instructors waken to the fact that Iho most important work they can lay their hands to is the religious instruefion of our young? It is not any use bewailing the fact that the younger generation is drifting into indifference on spiritual matters when opportunities to influence the child mind are net. utilised. Is some of those ministers responsible for the Bible classes at Georgo Et.reot could not attend peronally, surely they could have arranged for substitutes. Even ordinary courtesy and businesslike methods calls for such a procedure.—l nrn, etc., A Parent.
