C.J.C. MEETING. BALLYMENA WINS CANTERBURY CUP. OAKS WON BY RAZZLE DAZZLE. (Fncfti Oub Special RepomTk.l CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. The N eiv Zealand Cup meeting was continued in line weather, but a strong breeze was in evidence all day, and made matters rather unpleasant. An effort was, however, made towards keeping the dust down by hosing the ground in front of the totalisator and the approaches to it. The attendance showed a decided shrinkage on that which viewed the sport provided by the opening cards. r J he track was fast and firm, and despite the breeze blowing down the straight some good times were recorded. Although it was rumoured that Lochson had been causing his trainer some anxiety, he started favourite for the Hurdles, but Sir Fanciful was too good for both him and Sir Rosebery. Reel Admiral led to the straight, but there petered out. Sir Rosebery might have been more dangerous, hut he lost ground when Bon Spec fell. Killocra was an oacls on chance for the Spring ’ Nursery. He used Tresham as a wind shield up to about the distance, and although at one time the favourite appeared to bo winning easily, he had to be shaken up at the finish. The pair went right away from the others. Ardour turned into the straight in the Otaio Plate under a strong pull, but she collapsed when challenged, and Mountain Crag won nicely enough from Guncnse. Dame Straitlace ran a poor race, and Kilgour broke down. The Canterbury Cup was probably the best race ever seen in connection with this long-established event. All the old brigade were strongly backed, as there was a doubt about Ballymena being quite at his best. A good three-year-old is almost invincible at woight-for-age over such a distance. Ballymena was allowed to pay a good price for the above-mentioned reason. Instead, however, of subjecting him to a severe test the others ran the race to suit him by allowing the throe-vear-old to set a slow pace in front of the field. Royal Star and Sunrtrt were the only runners to keep up with him, and when the pace was clapped on the others were left lengths and lengths away. There was some excuse for Rouen, as he broke clown and hobbled back to the padclock. Snnart went up to Ballymena when (hey entered the straight, but (he latter comfortably held him at bay. To show what a false run race it was, it need only be mentioned that the sectional times were: Six furlongs. Imin 25see; 10 furlongs, 2min 22 3-ssec; 12 furlongs, 2min 48 3-ssec; 14 furlongs. 3min Psec. The Jockey Club Handicap was n close betting race between Gold Light, Limelight. Angelo, and Roadicea. Limelight won meritoriously, as she had to come round her field to get to the front, and under strong pressure managed to shall off Printemps. Angelo ran a good race, and so did Martian Miss, as she was last into the straight. Castellan ran a fair race, and so did Prince Ferouz and Boadicea, but they dropped out at the business end. Razzle Dazzle set a solid pace in the Oaks, in which the surprise was furnished by tho manner in which (ho Absurd fillv Parody stayed on. Wild Hind went well up to the home turn, oriel then had enough. Razzle Dazzle ran the first half in 51 S-Ssoc. six furlongs in Imin 17seo, and the mile in Imin 43 4-ssec, Her full time was nearly two seconds faster than that registered in the Derby Scorn suffered interference in the Asldev Handicap, or otherwise might have been closer up. Balasor. however, won handsomely enough, although inclined to run away from the whip. Soliform, Sunny Loch, and Pencils wore fighting out the Avon Weller inside the distance when Wink, who had been at the tail of iho field, caino with a good run and beat the heavily-laden Sunny Loch. Ponens looked a winner at one stage, hut, he faded in the last half-furlong, as did Sohform. During the day £46,2f12 10s went through the totahsator, as against £55,515 on (he R«ul‘tg° ndin8 ’ daT ° f ' aSt y ° ar ' s moetin Snr JT° RT i' OOP7 ' :R HURDLES, Of 400s°vs One mile and three-quarters. 0— Mr J. THE MELBOURNE CUP, VICTORY FOR THE FAVOURITE. Press Association —By Telegraph —Copyright SYDNEY, November 7. The Daily Telegraph says: “After a good start one of the first to show out was King Ingoda from David, Coinique, and Backwood. When the field settled down there was much crowding to the rails. Then Comiquo forged to the front, and established a useful lead until the stand was reached, when Mirthmaker was leading the field. Rivoli at this stage was last. Para too assumed command going from the straight, tne fluctuating changes in the leadership indicating a disinclination for one hori-e to monopolise the donkey work. At the bridge Paratoo was still running strongly in front, with Bitalli in the middle of the field. iho Cypher and Purser moved np at the Abattoirs, David being fifth last. At the five furlongs post Paratoo and Mirthmaker were in command, Bitalli being fifth, on the outside. Running for home, the last-named went to the front, and carried the field into the straight, hotly pursued by Paratoo, Ooroique, Valwynne, and Rapine, the New Zealander making a mn on the rails, with David and Rivoli next. The last-named continued to gain on Bitalli, but lie failed to get up.” The Morning Herald says: “ Bitalli was the heaviest supported. Rivoli taking second place in public affection. The field presented a fine picture as it made 'for the starting post. They moved off together, but when the horses settled down there was no hustling for good positions, as the bulk of the horses seemed to have plenty of galloping space. After several changes in the command, Paratoo and Mirthmaker divided the honours at five furlongs; but it was soon apparent that this was only on sufferance, for to the accompaniment of shouts of ‘Hero comes Bitalli,’ the latter shot to the front, with danger threatening from Rivoli, who was ridden hard by Munro. Wilson was riding confidently, despite Rivoli's game effort to overhaul the leader, both displaying the true stamina of thoroughbreds. In the finishing effort Bitalli had three-quarters of a length to spare as he flashed past the post. Acoarak moved up at the three furlongs post, but. despite a brilliant burst, it was clear that he had no chance of overtaking the leaders. Coinique was always handy, and finished gamely, being fourth. Bitalli justified the confidence reposed in him by his supporters, but Rivoli ran a great race, giving away a lot of weight to a year older rival.” MELBOURNE NOTES.
