MEASURES FOR RELIEF. GOVERNMENT GRANTS £IOOO. (From Ode Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. November 7. The South Island is more affected by th< depredations of deer than is the North Island, and recently complaints have been made, coupled with pleas for the removal of the protection existing in the interests of sportsmen. The complaints have been considered by the Government, and it has been decided to remove the protection on deer in certain areas within the following acclimatisation districts where the animal! are in great numbers and have been damaging property: Nelson, North Canterbury, Westland. Otago, Waitaki. and Southland. “In order to . ssist in the destruction of deer in these dirtricte,” said the Hon. R. F. Bollard to-day, “the Government haa : resolved to make a grant of £IOOO, and this sum will be allocated in proportion to the estimated number of deer in the districts mentioned. As the acclimatisationsocieties in the respective districts propose! culling or thinning out the deer in those! areas where protection is not removed, part of the grant will be payable to the acclimatisation societies for this purpose. The! basis of distribution will be as follows :-r-Two-thirds of the amount allocated to each district will be paid in respect of the deer destroyed in the unprotected portion, and one-third in the portion where the animals are protected, being at the rate of 2s al head for deer destroyed in the unprotected areas and Is a head for those animals destroyed in the protected areas.” The Minister added that in addition to the proposal outlined he had made arrangements through the Hon. Sir R. H. Rhodes (Minister of Defence) for the supply by the! Defence Department of ammunition to acclimatisation societies, and that further de-t-ils would be published in the newspapers circulating in the districts concerned. THE ECONOMICAL TRUSTEE.
