FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
TAPLEY CUP CONTEST. Unusual interest was displayed on Saturday last at Hillside Workshops -when ■ Hillside Railway Fire Brigade held its annual competitions. A large attendance of visiting firemen and friends were present to witness the run off for the Tapley Cup. This cup was presented to the brigade by the Mayor to commemorate the splendid achievement of the Hillside Brigade in winning the United Fire Brigades’ Championship held in Dunedin in March last, and giving Dunedin the honour of haying the champion fire brigade of the dominion. The run set by the brigade is the “Gilberd Memorial” event—an event which every fireman aspires to win. The Tapley Cup also carries with it. the Brigade Championship and a gold medal presented by the brigade. The following acted as officials •Judges: Ex-Fireman A. T-aploy) if bad fallen to his lot to present the cup, and he did so with great pleasure. lie had always wished to see the individual effort of this very fine brigade, and to-day he had witnessed an excellent performance. Particularly had he watched Secretary Burcress, whose tactics ami training narl stood him in good stead. He hoped the brigade would uphold its reputation at the forthcoming demonstration to be held under the Southern Districts' Association at Alexandra in February next.
