WOMEN’S CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Womens Citizens’ Association was held last evening in the Young Men's Christian Association Rooms, Mrs E. F. Leech presiding. Ihe attendance was not a large one. Formal business having been disposed of the annual report was read by Mrs Fels, and was as follows-‘‘During 1923 there have been 14- meetings of the executive and six general meetings of the association. In June, Mrs Murray, a former police patrol, gave an interesting account of her experiences while in the position of police patrol. Mrs Leech and Mrs Clark wore appointed as delegates to join the Society for the Protection of Women and Children in sending a deputation to Mr Massey asking for the appointment of women police. At (he first general meeting of the year the president of the association. Mrs E. F. Leech, as a candidate for the City Council, addressed the members of the association on municipal matters, and asked for (heir assistance in furtherance of her candidature. In April, the Hon. C. E. Statham. Speaker of the House of Representatives, gave a lecture on ‘Parliamentary Procedure,’ and subsequent lectures were given bv Dr M'Kihbin on Tnsnection and Distribution of Food,’ in which Mr Armour took nart: on ‘Town Planning and Mom mg’ by Mr E. A. Anscombe; and on ‘Housing Problem’ by Mr H. L. Taplej'. In October an executive meeting only was held, and suggestions for Health Week drawn up to be presented by two of the members to Dr Hercus. and brought befom the Health Week authorities The association approached the Otago Expansion League asking that they might be allowed to co-operate with that body in a scheme (or the promotion of town planning, and was assured by the secretary that the matter would be gone into further.” The adoption of the report was moved by Mrs Rundle, seconded by Mrs Megget, and carried. Miss Jackson read the annual balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £3 2s Bd.—The balance sheet was approved of. The following office-bearers were appointed:—President, Mrs E. F. Leech (reelected); vice-presidents—Mesdames Meggot, Mayer, and Grainger: secretary, Mrs Fels; committee —Mesdames Downing. Carmalt Jones, Mathewson, Hayward, Rundle. J. R. Paterson, Misses Hill Jack, and Grainger. Mrs Megget and Mrs Maver were elected delegates to the National Council of Women. After the election of office-bearers the chairwoman referred in a few words to defaulting husbands, and remarked that where they were imprisoned the unfortunate wife was in a worse position than before.
