CRICKET ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the Otago Cricket Association was held last night in Mr E. S. Wilson’s board room, there being present; Messrs G. A. Martin (in the chair), T. O’Shea, A. Galland, F. Rylance, J. J. Clark, Crosby Morris, A. Restieaux, R. Binnie, and W. A. Rowlands. Mr J. H. A. MThee, hon. secretary of the Otago Boys’ Cricket League, applied to have the league affiliated with the association. —Application granted. Mr H. G, Beadle, hon. secretary of the North-East Valley Cricket Club, wrote with reference to military parades interfering with- cricket. He hoped that the association would take the matter up and endeavour to have cricketers exempt from half-day parades.—lt was decided that the 'military authorities bo written to asking for exemption and promising to make up the lost parades. Mr Robin Adair, boys’ work director of the Y.M.C.A., wrote stating that there was no possibility of their being able to keep a fourth grade team in the competition this season, and asking that they retain No. 5 wicket on the Oval for the Boys’ League team.—To be advised that owing to_ the shortage of wickets the request for No. 3 wicket on the Oval could not be complied with, and referred the - writer- to Mr X’annock, who may be able to provide a suitable wicket. Mr J. F. Peake, hon. secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, wrote conveying the council’s appreciation of Mr Martin’s services while present at a meeting of the council held in Christchurch recently.—Received. The secretary of the Dunedin Bowling Centre (Mr R. Hanning) wrote stating that the centre could not support the proposal to ask the Evening Star proprietary to issue the Sports Special during the summer months?—Mr F. E. CTanperton, on behalf of the Evening Star proprietary, wrote stating that it would not be possible to comply with the association’s request to issue the Sports Special during the summer ■months.—Received. Mr G. A. Lewin, town clerk, wrote replying to the association’s request for the use of five wickets on the Oval, and stating that the council was not in a position to allot the association more than three wickets at present. If possible, another wicket will ho prepared for the association on the area reserved for boys’ cricket, provided, however, that such wicket was used on Saturday afternoons only. The,,area to be set aside for the use of boys ‘•was situated at the north-western corner of the reserve abutting on the monument. The charge for the wickets will "be the same as in previous seasons —viz., £5 per wicket.—Received. Mr R. Swinney, hon. secretary’ of the N.Z.A.A.A. (Otago Centro), wrote stating that a meeting or representatives of the various sports organisations would be held in Mr Divers’s board room on the 13th inst. to consider the question of sending a New Zealand representative or representatives to the Empire and Olympic games.—The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) said that he had discussed the matter with those associated with "other branches of sport, and he was of opinion that this was a matter which should bo left to athletic bodies.—Secretary’s opinion approved. THE NORTHERN TOUR. With regard to the northern tour, which opens at Christchurch on Christmas Day, the president said he thought it- was desirable that berths he engaged on the ferry steamer for the Friday night prior to New Year. The Selection Committee had met and had picked a number of players for practice, and it was, suggested that the players selected should be asked to contribute towards the expenses of the trip.—The secretary said that each player contributed £8 last year towards the expenses of the tour. —The president thought that on this occasion each player should be asked to contribute £5 towards the trip.—Mr J. J. Clark thought the matter should be held over till next meeting, as it might be able to finance the tour without asking contributions from the players selected. —The president said the matter was one which must be settled right away. —Mr W. A. Rowlands thought the association’s share of the proceeds of the recent carnival would be £3OO. —The secretary said that he understood the Auckland players contributed towards such trips.—Mr Clark thought there were many of their plavers would would find it difficult to put down £5-—Mr Rowlands thought that that- was a matter which could easily bo arranged, as had been done in the past.—The secretary said the northern tour last year cost £356, against which members’ contributions, also, refunds, etc., had to be considered.—Mr Crosby Morris said he' would like to send these men free if possible. He knew of two men who could have gene last year had their expenses been paid. The question was: Was it desirable for the sake of £6O to send away a weak team? —The president said there were some men who would not spend one shilling. They should try and conserve their funds, and they should* have no hesitation in asking the players to contribute. It was regrettable that money be spent on some men who were unworthy. He, personally, would have nothing to do . with it.—Mr Clark said he resented the term unworthy. —After some further discussion it was decided that a circular be sent to all players who have been selected to practise, stating that the funds of the association, though much improved ns a result of the recent carnival, were lower than the association would like them to be, and that in view of the expense of sending a team north it is hoped that every member of the team will see his way to contribute £5 towards the expense of the northern tour, and that the Selection Committee be instructed to select the best team. The following players were selected to practise for the northern tour: Alloo (2), Worker, Dickinson, Dunning. Fraser, Shephard, Blamires, Galland, Knight, M'Mullm, Conradi, Torrance, Casey, Cherry, Baker, and M’Gregor; practice captains—worker, Shephard, and Galland. Practices are to be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursday. , .. , The president reported that practices had commenced, and arrangements made for the three practice captains to take charge of the practices. The selectors had determined that only men who attended practices will be selected. TOUR OF NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Crosby Morris, seconded by Mr W. A. Rowlands, that the New Zealand Cricket Council be written to asking of a test match in addition to a match against It was resolved on the motion of Mr J. .T. Clark, seconded by Mr W. A. Rowlands, that the council be written to asking them to let the association have particulars of the financial arrangements made between the council and the various associations with regard to the lour of the New South Wales team. OTHER MATTERS. On the motion of Mr Rowlands, seconded by Mr Galland, it was resolved that a committee be set up to formulate a policy for the improvement of reserves for cricket —the president, secretary, Mr lowlands, and !\lr O SliGft- . , It wris resolved to draw the attention of the Christian Brothers to the rule requiring them to provide a wicket, and pointing out that the Y.M.C.A. wicket was available.
