A preliminary nieeung ot persons tayourable to the establishment of a Naval Brigade in the city was held last evening in M’Gubbin’s Hotel. . . It was determined that the committee should receive and perfect the draft of a memorial, to bo prepared by the Hon. Secretary, to his Excellency the Governor, requesting his sanction to formation of a Naval Brigade. The following gentlemen were enrolled as members of the Committee—Messrs R. Paterson, O’Meagher, Mitchell. Herbert, M'Leod, Craig, Mttmford, Burrows, Wilson, Braithwaite, Dr Hardy, Dumb, \V. Paterson, and Chas. Dickson, Hon. Secretary. Several cases of trespass within the “Town Trespass Ordnance, 1858,’’ were brought before the Resident Magistrate yesterday. The olfencc, in the language of the Act, consists in “permitting cattle, the properly of defendant, to depasture within the limits of the town of Dunedin.” r ihe parties charged with this offence yesterday had permitted their cattle to depasture on the Town Belt, and the question was whether the Town Belt is within or without the limits of the town. . . The magistrate imposed penalties on the assurance given by one of the defendants that he would take steps to obtain the opinion of the Supreme Court on a case stated by his Worship.
