SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

REASONS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. TOO MUCH MONEY SPENT ON DRINK. Pnw Association—By Telegraph-—Copyright LONDON, November 4. Sir George Hunter (who is connected with a number of shipbuilding and engineering companies), speaking at the Newcastle Rotary Club, said that the reasons for unemployment in the shipbuilding industry were high wages and drink. The recent reduction in wages, amounting to 4 per cent., had led to a corresponding increase in the volume of work available. He said that if the money spent on liquor were devoted to the purchase of useful commodities the position of industry would be materially improved.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
