THE TARIFF QUESTION. AN APPEAL TO THE COUNTRY. Prsaa Association—By Telegraph—Copyrfj U LONDON, November 4. Mr Neville Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer), speaking at Cardiff, referred to the Government’s proposal of a general tariff for manufactured goods. Hs said that an Advisory Committee would be appointed immediately to interview Representatives of the different industries, and only after collecting all the information would the Government he able to frame a general tariff. He intimated that such proposals would be submitted for the decision of the country before next winter. —A. and N.Z. Cable. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. LABOUR PARTY’S GAINS. LONDON, November 4. At the municipal elections for .500 seats in 81 boroughs, the Conservatives lost Tf and the Liberals 24. Labour gained hi and the Independents four. Sir Reginald Plain, chairman of the National Union of Ratepayers, declares that Thursday’s municipal elections are tantamount to a severe defeat of Labour aspirations. Labour organised intensive campaigns, but gained only about 30 seats spread over 100 towns. —A. and N.Z. and Reuter Cables.
