HEALTH WEEK COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Health Week executive was held in the TWn Hall yesterday afternoon and wap attended by wme 25 members. The Mayor (Mr IT. L Tap lev' was in the chair. 5 The Chairman said that he had called ’ a meeting of the representatives of the ! combined committees in order to personally ■ express his deep appreciation of the splendid services rendered by one and all in ' connection with the week. lie thought mat everyone would admit that Health Week had been a huge .success. That success * had been duo to the great assistance rendered by members of the .Medical .School, ' the Dental School, the social workers, tho members of the churches, the schbols, and various other bodies. The speaker paid a tribute to the excellent work carried out ; by Dr AlTvibbin, the city health officer, who had inaugurated the movement. Dr M’ixibbin had not only started the movement, but he had worked hard to carry it through.—( 'Hear, hear.”) They had ri“o to thank the various lecturers and performers at Burns Hall. These lectures hai proved most interesting anil instructive. j.ltey had also hud a cleaning up week in connection with tho movement, and it might interest them to know that the City Corporation had cleared away between 300 and 350 loads of rubbish from the city back yards. The people who had not been able to attend the lectures had the opportunity of reading very full reports in the press, and they were very much obliged for the publicity given by this means. In connection with the expenditure they had received in donations a considerable amount. The council had agreed to guarantee them a sum of i«wiU, the Red Cross Society and the St. .John Ambulance Association had given them £SO. Australian Provident Association £5 ss, Provident Life Company £5 bs, T. and G. Mutual Life Company £5 ss. and Mr T. Somerville £5. This made a total of £320 15s, and the expenses had amounted to_ £284 7s 4d. The City Council bad also paid for the men and carls required for the clearing aw*» •>,’ toe rubbish. Dr Stuart Moore moved the adoption of the .statement and revenue and expenditure submitter! by the Mayor. He thought tile efforts made by the committee bad been highly satisfactory, and reflected great credit on those responsible for them. The economical manner in which tho Work had been carried out was highly satisfactory. Mrs Jackson seconded the motion. Di' AlTvibbin said that from his point ot view of Medical Officer of Health the week had been very successful. He said, of course, it Was nart of his duty as Medical-Officer of to assist in these matters, but he was deeply grateful to the people of Dunedin for what they, had done. 1 hey way in which the professional men had rallied round them was worth}- of commendation. Among others who had rendered yeoman service he mentioned Messrs S. B. Macdonald, x. VV. Mitchell, and C. K. Bossence. I ho-motion wa,. then ( put and carried. The Mayor said that 1 following on what Dr APKibbin had said the executive had retained copies of posters and records of all (heir proceedings for future reference, rt was a question of how frequently Health \V eek should be field. Dr MTCibbin said that if it were to be held annually lie thought it should be on a smaller scale. He thought, however, that cleaning, up week*’ should be held more frequently—once a quarter, perhaps, would not bo too often. The Chairman said that sonte such idea with regard to collecting rubbish had emanated from Cr Sincock, and he, the speaker, heartily endorsed it. _ Mr Sincock said the opinion of the City Council was that the ‘‘cleaning up process” ■should be continued once a. month or once a quarter. There would I hen he no excuse for residents having their backyards lumbered up with rubbish. Mr S. B Macdonald said the people he thought had realised that it was not a Dunedin Health Week which had been established, but an Otago Health Week. The Chairman said various matters which had brought no for discussion during Health Week had been attended to, or were on a fair way to be accomplished. He referred to (he dog nuisance and expectorating on footpaths. Both (hese matters were receiving the consideration of the council. .Mr Sincock moved that Health Week be held again next. year. Dr Barnett, in seconding the motion, said there would he no difficulty in continuing the Health Week campaign annually. His own opinion was that “there was a little too much lecture” on this occasion, but that could readily be overcome. He thought that, lie had been misunderstood regarding the dog nuisance. He was not an enemy of the dog—far from it. What he wanted was dogs to be under control. Dr Moore said he favoured Health Week being held annually. Among the mutters which had emanated from last Health Week, and which were being taken up heartily were: Tho dog nuisance, expectorating on footpaths, tho.. clearing up of rubbish, and the sweeping of shops. The motion was ccvried. It was also resolved on the motion of Air J. J. Clark, seconded by Mrs Leech, that (he present committee bo retained in office for the carrying out of the Health Week campaign in 1524. The Chairman referred to the excellent manner in which their secretary (Mr Clive Evans) had carried out his duties, and it was decided to place on the minutes the appreciation of the various committees for the work he had done. Mr S. B. Alacdonald also congratulated the committee on haviiig such a capable and painstaking secretary.
