NEW ZEALAND CLP MEETING. 0 PILLIEWTNKIE WINS METROPOLITAN (From Oub Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 5. The New Zealand Cup meeting was continued in fine weather, but a breeze kept clouds of dust iu mast unwelcome evidence. There was a fairly large attendance and so mo interesting racing. The track was probably faster than on the opening day, and some smart gallops were recorded. Blue Socks won comfortably from Gold Star, who was kept a bit too far out of his ground in the early part of the race. Sunny Loch was made a slightly bettor •■favourite than Gold Light in the Criterion Handicap, and there was also good support for Boadicca and Rational, although the distance is generally considered beyond the ' last-named. Lovesign set a solid pace along the back, and was followed by Many Kittle, Boadicca. and Piinternps as they approached the home turn, whilst Martian Miss was improving her position. Lovesign •was about three lengths clear as they straightened for home, and inside the distance Boadicen and Martian* Miss wore in liot pursuit. In a close finish. Martian Miss just got up to win in the last stride, whilst Boadicca was a good third. Sunny Loch, who began from the outside of the field, was never dangerous, and neither was Gold Light. Many Kittle dropped right out of it in the run home. Anything not well placed in the early stages had not much chance of getting up in such a fastfun race. Lovesign ran a good race and was unlucky to get beaten on the post. The Australian horse, Ned Tanadees, was a very strong order for the Irwell Handicap, but ho failed badly. Taku Uru lost a good chance of winning owing to a stirrup leather breaking. A stable-mate in Kiki is said to bo faster, but she whipped round at the rise of the barrier. Ballymena, although not regarded as so well as when ho won at Ranchvick, wont out favourite for the Derby, with Wild Hind next in demand. There was not much pace on over the first half-mile, and Ballymena went to the front. He was cloaelv attended by Black Ronald as they straightened for home, and the latter soon had the favourite in trouble, but he hung on gamely. Black Ronald came away, and, staying on well, scored by a good margin, whilst there was nothing between the next three in a ding-dong go in which The Polymnian was slaying on better than the others, ’The winner is a handsome, wellgrown colt and can obviously to a good deal improved in condition, so that he should continue to show improved form as the season progresses. As a result of Red Wink making a good show in the Spring Plate with Soliform and Black Ronald, he went out a strong fancy for the Hagley Handicap, but he got a bad run and Warhue won comfortably. Viewpoint showed improved form, and a well-backed chance in Miss Mickey may be better served by a shorter journey. Roseday and Enthusiasm were always disputing favouritism in the betting on the Metropolitan Handicap, and there was good support for Deucalion. Sunart, Pilliewinkie, and Dame Straitlace. Quest at once set nut to make the pace, and Roseday, who began from the extreme outside of the field, was raced into second place as they left the straight. Roseday held his place until four furlongs from home, where Pilliewinkie and Dame Straitlace went past him on the rails. The field bunched up before ' reaching the straight, where Pilliewinkie came away and won by nearly four lengths, and in such a manner as to suggest that he would have taken a power of beating. Bunart looked dangerous at one stage, but »d the finish Bonnetter, who had made «p a good deal of ground, cut him out of second place. Zouave was a good fourth. Enthusiasm was in the ruck going along the back, and moved up at the home turn, hut failed in the run home. The race will do her good. Roseday was fairly well up at the distance, but was under hard pressure. and then faded away. Quest again faded out, and the extra weight on Dame Straitlace told a tale. Pilliewinkie did not get too good a run in the Cup, and ran. so well to-day that ho must have been far more dangerous in the big race with a better run to favour his chance. Geranial was under difficulties as ho did Pot get a good passage in the race, and just got up to beat Sprinkler, who is a three-year-old brother to Pilliewinkie. Mantua had to be hard ridden to get to the front in her race, and once there Finereon kept_ her going until safely past the post. _ Prince Ferouz ran a good race, and so did Cleasanta, but Avispado and Red jKriss both stopped after reaching the straight. , During the day £51,183 10s went through the totalisator, as against £54,413 10s last year. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 5. The- Sydney Morning Herald says: “Rounding the home turn in the Derby, King Carnival and Black Scot were in front, but on the outside a flash cf white-and-orange was seeu to move faster and faster. The cry went up ‘Tressady vans!’ and th© positions of the field gradually changed as tiie filly, with untiring energy, raced on and passed the post ahead of Drongo. Kenilcost came from a long way back for third money, but he was a poor third, as he was four lengths behind Drongo.” The Daily Telegraph says: “When Frances Tressady shot to the front .at the top of the straight she looked like winning easily, but at half the distance it appeared as if Drongo, with an opening on the rails, would overhaul her. Each name in - turn was called by the crowd. Lewis ’vigorously punched Drongo right out, but in the lust 100 yards fho filly, galloping smoothly, drew away and won by three-quarters of a length. The distance was too great for King Carnival. Rahiri and Black Scot also weakened near the post.” . Dempsey says he had a good run all th© way. The filly galloped on the heels of the other horses at one stage, but once they rounded the home turn she went so well that he knew she was safe to win. BOWLING and croquet.
