INTRIGUE IN EGYPT
UNTRIED DEMOCRACY. LONDON, October 19. The sooner the elections under the neiy Constitution are held, and Egypt embarks on a career of wholesome Constitutibnal Government, the better it will b© for the country (says the Cairo correspondent of The Times). * The present intermediate stage is daily, demonstrating how little democratic Government is suited to the nation. Everyone apparently still, trusts to intrigue and underhand government. An inside observer cau scarcely believe that Egypt can learn to govern herself on democratic principles within a few months. Zaghlul Pasha’s illness proves his dominating position. It has brought his political activity to a standstill after he roundly informed his followers that he alone possessed the right to nominate party candidates : but the rival National Party is indulging in subtle and mischievous propaganda, basing great hopes on the return of the notorious Sheikh Shamish. The Sheikh is a bitter opponent of Zaghlul, and an infinitely more violent agitator.
