CRICKET.

FIRST GRADE MATCHES. The two first grade cricket matches were concluded on the North Ground on Saturday. The weather was showery, and a sirong wind considerably hampered the bowlers. Grange secured a two-point win on the first innings against Dunedin, and Albion met with similar success against Carisbrook. GRANGE v. DUNEDIN. On the first day of the Grange-Dunedin match Grange made 243 and Dundin lost one wicket for 23. When play was resumed on Saturday, Galland and Conradi opened the bowling, and soon of the remaining Dunedin batsmen. M’Farlune and Eckhold were the only two to make a stand, M'Farlane scoring 45 and Eckhold 24. M'Farlane played good cricket, and scored all round the wicket, his total including eight fours and one six. As Dunedin had compiled only 136 runs in the first innings, they were again sent in to bat. Cherry scored freely, and knocked up 72 before he was caught by Chadwick. His score included a dozen fours. Strang did not play as aggressively ns Cherry, but added 27 to the total by means of good strokes. Baker arrived late, but in time to bat, and scored 27 not out by nice cricket. In the first innings Galland and Conradi bowled well, the former taking five wickets for 45 runs and the latter four for 52. In the second innings they did not meet with the same success, and three other bowlers were tried. M'Gregor and Collett were the best of these, the former capturing four wickets for 56 and the latter three for 41. The third ball of M’Gregor's fifth over M'Farlane hit over the trees for six,, but with the next ball but one M'Gregor had his revenge, getting M'Farlane leg-before-wicket. Scores GHANUE. At 100 rims seven wickets had fallen, and the last wicket fell at 127. Dickinson quickly compiled 19 (including a six _ off Keast), and then his wicket fell to Blamires. Hloniirea (four for 19). Playing for Grange. Houston scored 69. Gould 18. and Powell 16, and Vorrath took four wickets for 20 runs and Laumer three for 12. For Carisbrook Clarridgo made 23 (not out) and Giles 11. Haynes, Henderson, and Giles bowled well for Carisbrook. North-East Valley (66 and four for 40) beat Harris (26 and eight for 91) on the first innings. For Valley Langley (13), Hope (18, not out), and M. Faithful (17) were the principal scorers, and for Harris. Smith (10), Mackey (15), Moss (21), Sullivan (30) batted well. Ferguson (nine wickets for 64 runs), Ait ken (seven for 28), and Arthur (two for seven) were the most successful Valley bowlers Si. Kilda (92 runs) defeated Kaikorai (90 runs). Lynskey (six for nine) and Burrell (five for 14) bowled well for Christian Brothers, and Delahunty (31, not out), ' O'Connor (26), Burrell (17). and Lynskey (16) were top scorers for the Brothers. LEAGUE CRICKET. 1 Standard (five for 152) defeated Railway, A (62). For the winners Quest (63), Riaoh (341, Holden (24) batted well, as did King (26) and Coatsworth (13) for the losers. For Standard Riach (five for 23) and Hodge (three lor 15) bowled well, as did Hellyer (three for 46) for Railway A. Hillside (five for 85) defeated Port Chalmers B (41 and 17), thus securing a threepoint win. The principal scores for Hillside were Glover (35, not put). Edwards (17;, and Cowan (17). while for Port Chalmers B Mothers (12 and 11) was (he only one to reach double figures. Glover (seven for 21), M’Queen (six for 23). and Eckoff (five for 12) for Hillside, and Marshall (five for 36) for Port Chalmers B shared the howling honours. jVlethven’s secured a three-point win from Railway B. For M'Glashan College Riley took throe wickets tor 29 and Dunnet two for 18. The Otago Boys’ Cricket League opened the season on Saturday, when play was initiated on the Caledonian and North Grounds. Officially the season was inaugurated on the Caledonian - Ground. Before the play began over a hundred members of the various League clubs were assembled and addressed by the president, Mr Theomin, and other officials of the League. Mr Theomin in his talk to the boys briefly outlined the aims of the League and stressed the of the game, both from the point of view of health, manliness, sport, fair play, and also citizenship, not forgetting at the same time to eulogise the part played in the Great War by the sportsmen of the Empire.
