SIXTY YEARS AGO FROM THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1863.
In the neighbourhood of Manuherikia the bones of a largo, bird, in a state of remarkable preservation, were found by a party of diggers in the course of their operations, ".'ho presented them to Mr Shaw, the agent of the Bank of New South Wales there. . . The bones of the leg and thigh, which are of enormous length and thickness compared with those of the body, combined with the vertebrae of the neck (which are all separated from each other) render it probable that the bird, when standing, would not bo less than nine feet high. . . It is supposed to be a skeleton of the Moa. Wo have news from the West Taieri Rush from our special reporter up to ten a.m. of yesterday. . . Very rich finds had been made during the past week by parties of miners, as the gold when found at all is generally found in quantity. A small blind gully at the back of the township is stated to have yielded gold by the pound weight. Reports of many cases of individual success are numerous, and the goldbearing country is evidently of very, wide extent. Our reporter expresses the belief that the gold will be traced down to the very commencement of the Ranges or to within a very few miles of this city. . .
