Advices from Canton report that Dr Sun-Yat-sen’s troops were heavily defeated near Wai-chow; while four gunboats which had hitherto supported his cause suddenly declared themselves neutral on Sunday, and left for an unknown destination. Only one loyal gunboat re mains at Canton.—Reuter. Following upon the election last month of Marshal Tsao-kun to the office of President, Dr Sun-Yat-sen, the Southern Constitutionalist Leader, issued a manifesto in which he denounced the election and declared war on Marshal Tsao-kun, against whom he ordered the organisation of a punitive expedition. Dr Sun-Yat-sen intended also to proceed against all the members of Parliament who participated in the election. Coincidentally 76 members of Parliament mot and repudiated the election of Marchal Tsao-kun, declaring that it was invalid because of widespread bribery.
