THE MODERN SCHOOL BOY.
PICTURES AND ICE CREAM. TOO MUCH SPOON-FEEDING. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 25. Mr J. Caughley, Director of Education, at a meeting with the Canterbury teachers tc-day. strongly criticised the apathy of the modern schoolboy in undertaking clean, wholesome sport. He deplored the growing preference for “pictures and ice-cream—men-tally and physically indigestible stuff.’’ This matter w;i s introduced by a discussion of the subsidies asked for from the Government for payment for material for games. Mr Caughley said that there was a growing danger of too much spoon-feeding of children in this respect, and if the subsidies were granted it would amount to more Plan those present would think. The de. partment had to consider which were the most pressing needs, and the provision of suitable habitations for teachers, for instance. was of far greater importance. He asked how many boys to-day relied on themselves to provide their own sport. How many could spin a top. make their own kites or stilts? Now they had to be cajoled and persuaded to take an active part in games, and everything had to be provided. Some schools eVen bought thy jerseys in which the boys played football, and the next thing would be the provision of football boots or a motor car to take them to the match. He deplored the money wasted on frivolous pursuits, considering none or little was forthcoming from the children themselves to pay for their own games. SAFETY IN “VELVET.” The risk of transmission of microbes, germs, and harmful bacteria is banished with “Velvet,” the sterilised soap. Every bar guaranteed pure by analyst’s certificate.
