GOLF.
THE BALLYMONEY CUP. Ths annual competition for the Ballymoney Cup was played on the Waikouaiti course on Labour Day, when 35 golfers, representing Dunedin, Oamaru, and Invercargill clubs, took part. The day was beautifully fine, but a strong nor'-wester made some of the carries against the wind difficult, and aggravated the troubles arising from slicing or pulling on a course which, though short, is punishing to those who cannot keep the ball straight. The handicappers brought the field well together. Six players were within two strokes of each other, and only six strokes separated the first dozen. The best cards were: Gross. Hep. Net. G. T. Dawson, Dunedin .. .. 79 ecr 79 K. Russell, Invercargill .... 81 2 79 G. L. Cuthbertson, Oamaru .. 80 scr 80 L. G. Campbell, Dunedin .... 86 6 80 K. Ross, Dunedin 78 x 3 81 N. Armstrong, Oamaru .. 92 6 86 The 76 of Dr Ross was the best gross .score, and ho actually had a putt on the last green for a 76 and a tie with the leaders. In the play-off i>r the tie Dawson won with a score of 82, as against Russell's 85 gross, or 83 net, and thus won the cup for the third year in succession. The afternoon was devoted to a four-ball bogey match, which was won by G. L. Cuthbertson' (Oamaru) and B. J. Gilmour (Invercargill), who finished 5 up from scratch. A number of pairs were 3 up. After the, matches the competitor's were entertained by Mr and Mrs W. F. Edmond at afternoon tea, and before calling on Miss Edmond to present the prizes, Mr Edmond said that the presence of so many visitors to play for the Ballymoney Cup, which was now an established golf event, was a great source of satisfaction to the Waikouaiti Club. Not only was the entry large, but the quality of the competitors was high. Ho hoped that all had enjoyed the day’s outing, and that they would all meet again next year. Miss Edmond then presented the prizes, and in addition to the Ballymoney Cup, which cannot be won outright, Mr Dawson received a beautiful -silver miniature presented by Mrs C. W. Rattray. After the winners had replied, Mr R. J. Gilmour expressed the appreciation of the visitors of the kindness and hospitality extended to them and of the day’s golf on the fine rporting course that they had played over. Cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Edmond and Mr and Mrs Rattray.
