FIRE PREVENTION.

CAMPAIGN IN NEW SOUTH WALES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, October 10. A Fire Prevention Week has been suggested in order to awaken the public of Sydney to some of the simple causes which often give rise to* disastrous fires and which could be easily avoided by the exercise of a little of that common sense which is mostly so uncommon. For the purposes of the week a decalogue of Dont’s has been framed for the benefit of the public. One commandment.. for instance, advises people not to look for a ga s leak with a naked light, for they will be only too tragically sure to find it. Then there is the edict against smoking in ted. It is pointed out that, while those guilty of this habit are perhaps too green to bum, the beds are not. Another easy way to start a little conflagration is to read in bed with a naked gas jet or candle near a mosquito curtain. The use of kerosene when lighting the fire clso gives unexpected results at limes; so also does the use ■of petrol or other volatile liquids for removing spots from clothing or for cleaning gloves. There are scores of other ways in which you can wreck your home and probaby yourself. On the ground that prevention is better than extinction, the authorities are going to try to educate the public in order to reduce the danger of fire.
