PAYMENT IN MEAT

STORY OF AUSTRALIAN CONSIGNMENT. LONDON, October 6. The Australian Press Association hart learnt the details regarding the shipment* of a parcel of Australian beef to Germany. It appears that Sir Henry Jones, of! Hobart, when visiting Germany, met the proprietor of a large manufacturing business in the interior of Germany who was having serious trouble with his work-people owing to the high prices of food, especially meat, and the depreciated currency. Sir. Henry Jones said: “Why not pay them ini meat? I can provide you with Australian beef.” The German assented, and after many difficulties Sir Henry Jones’s London office succeeded in getting 276 tons shipped! to Hamburg in the steamer Durham. At Hamburg further difficulties. arose. No refrigerated trucks were available, all these trucks being controlled by other interests, mostly connected with the Argen-. tine. Finally, sufficient refrigerated trucks used by another industry were secured from another place, and the meat was despatched to the manufacturer 400 miles away on Wednesday.
