EMPIRE EXHIBITION.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS OR AWARDS. fFsosi Ocb Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October _ 18. The question of awards for the primary products of the dominions at the forthcoming Empire Exhibition in London was referred to Sir Francis Bell (Acting-Prime Minister) to-day. A recent cable message from London stated that owing to many difficulties in the way of assessing effectively the merits of the exhibits, the authorities propose to abandon competitive awards and issue instead a commemorative medal to all exhibitors. This proposal does not appeal to many of New Zealand’s primary producers, who think that while commemorative medals may be suitable for secondary industries, it would be more in the interests of the dominion to have medals awarded for excellence in its primary products. Sir Francis Bel! has decided to refer the matter to Cabinet and get its decision on the point.
