GOVERNOR ON TRIAL, LONG LIST OF CHARGES. : Association—Bv Telegraph-Copyright . SYDNEY, October 16. (Received Oct. 16, at 10.15 p.m.) The trial of Roy Governor has commenced at Dubbo. The evidence was similar to that given in the lower court. About the middle of May Roy Governor an aboriginal, terrorised the Mundooran district of New South Wales by a number qf bushranging exploits which he indulged ( in following his release from gaol after serving a sentence of five yeors for bur<rlary. He is said to be a son of the noted bushranger, Jimmie Governor, who was hanged in 1900.
He was arrested near Dubbo on June 7 after a n exchange of shots in which Governor and Sergeant Young were wounded. Details of the _arrest allowed that Sergeants Young and Payne, with a party of civilians acting on a report that Governor had been seen some miles east of Mundooran, went out and surprised him sitting behind a tin shelter. In reply to a demand for his surrender the outlaw, who was armed with a rifle, hid behind a tree. Sergeant Young fired, and Governor replied. A further exchange of shots followed, one of Governor’s bullets wounding Sergeant voting in the arm and incapacitating him. The interchange of shots continued until a welldirected shot caught Governor in the back as he was running to another tree. He fell, severely wounded, and was later removed to Dubbo Hospital, where it was found that, the bullet had penetrated his lung. Governor’s camp was found well stored with flour, sugar, mutton, ammunition, and a set of toilet requisites. He told his captors that he had got his bushranging ideas from books. Besides a wound in the arm, Y'-iung received a 'nastv wound in the hip from the same bullet
On recovering from his injury Governor was committed for trial on charges op shooting at Sergeant Young with intent to murder him, and assaulting a woman. Seven other counts against him included breaking and entering and theft.
