It also considered a. letter from Dr Pickeriil in connection with (he above. Tt also had before it it letter from the department stating that a grant of £20,000 had been approved for the new anatomy and physiology buildings on account of a grant of £50.000. Ihe committee was set up at the council meeting held on September JB. (o report to the combined Works. Medical, and Finance Committees, as to whether the provisions made in tho plans could lie cut down. Medical School.—W ith regard to the Medical School, the committee reports that, it has conferred with the architect and the dean, who assure the committee that neither the buildings nor the amount of tho osiimato can ho roducod, with the exception that the architect, states that it may he possible to reduce tho price bv £IOOO bv substituting cement facings for Oamaru stone. On the other hand, alterations and additions to the original plans may involve expenditure of £IOOO extra. Dental School. —The committee has conferred with the architect and the dean of the Dental Faculty and reports that it would be possible to reduce the cost by £IOOO if provision for a lift were excluded, and by a further £3OO if tho front elevation were simplified.’’ After fully considering the above it was resolved as follows: — (a) Medical School.—That the amended plans be sent to Wellington with a request that the University be given permission to call for tenders for the shell of the building at the next meeting of the council, the department to be given particulars as to what details are comprised in the shell. Further, that the Vice-chancellor be associated with the Registrar in drawing up the necessary letter. The committee further resolved that the tenants be given that their premises will shortly be required, formal notice to be given as soon as the position is ascertained. lb) Dental School.- The Vice-chancellor. Mr L. D. Ritchie, and tho Registrar were deputed to send a reply to the Education Department, a copy of this reply to be sent to tho Acting-Minister of Finance. In this letter an explanation was to be given to the department of the impraticubility of completing a new Dental School for the sum of £25,000. After discussion it was decided that the members of council meet the Hon. Mr Farr during his visit to Dunedin next week to discuss Medical and Dental School mutters with him and that action bo deferred till then. The committee meeting Air Parr was empowered to call tenders for both buildings and also to give notice to the tenants who are occupying the holdings that have to be vacated.
