REDUCED POSTAL RATES.

BIG INCREASE IN BUSINESS. STAFFS WORKING AT HIGH PRESSURE. (Fee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 16. ■ Since the introduction of the reduced postage rates, brought into operation on October 1, there has been a considerable increase in the number of postal packets posted. It is not possible to give at this early stage a reliable estimate of the effect of the reduced postage, but already it is evident that business firms and the general public are regularly using the Post Office more extensively. There appears to ‘ have been a general increase in the postings throughout the dominion, but at' the chief centres the position is more marked. The general increase throughout the day at the chief centres is already between 20 and 30 per cent., but the particular pressure in the principal mail rooms is, of course, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m., during which period the staff is working at very high pressure. The increase in posting during the hours mentioned is approximately 50 per cent.
