Garrard) covered nine furlongs on the grass in 2.4 J. Lamart went six furlongs in 1.25, Duke Isinglass taking half a second less for the same distance. Paratoo went four furlongs in 51Jsoc, and Bellamy three in 42Jseq. Gunadorah galloped a mile on the sand in 1.50, King Ingoda taking ssec longer. Bitalli did three furlongs in HiBnckwood, The Tyrant, and Graculus did useful work. Shrapnel and Evensong went four furlongs in 54£. At Caulfield Suomi beat Coringale over six furlongs on the grass in 1.19. Linlithgow beat Hamish over five furlongs on the grass in 1.3 J. Anklet went four furlongs in 51. Wilson will ride Hayhope. The following scratohings are announced for the Melbourne Cup :—King’s Trumpeter, Sidonia, All Serene. (Received Oct. 16, at 10.15 p.m.) Rapine arrived late to-night. J. H. Jofferd (his trainer) and G. L. Stead arrived to-day. Roy Reed will probably ride at Caulfield to-morrow. DEATH OF SASANOF. News was received on Monday from Mi - AY. G. Stead (says the Christchurch Press) that Sasanof dropped dead on Sunday. Mr Stead adds: “Sasanof was being ridden by my eldest son, who was getting him ready for the Hastings Show. Hector Gray used to say that he had great courage, so T suppose his heart was strained racing. His performances in beating Desert Gold and Gloaming, besides winning every Gold Cup race in New Zealand, will hardly ever be equalled.’ In addition, Sasanof has the honour of being the only horse who has won both the Melbourne and New Zealand Cups, the former in 1916 and the latter in 1918. Sasanof was without doubt one of the beat sons of, Martian to race either in Australia or in mow Zealand, while his dam, Ukraine, has not produced anything within comfortable distance cf his class.
