The Commonwealth Government has discovered that it has inherited an unexpected burden through the transference of the postmasters from the State to the Federal service. Under tire regulations of some of the States no retiring age is fixed, whereas the Commonwealth Government fixes the age at sixty-five. One retired officer sued the Federal Government for wrongful dismissal, and was awarded £2OOO as damages. The case was a test for others under which the claims approximate £IOO,OOO. INTER-STATE FREIGHTS REDUCED. SYDNEY, October 6. The Patrick Steamship Company announces a reduction ot 10 per cent, on all cargo freights between Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, commencing October B.—A. and N.Z. Cable. IMMIGRATION ADVOCATED. ADELAIDE, October 6. The Australian Natives’ Association’s conference resolved in favour of a strong immigration policy, based on vigorous rural development.
