ME STEAD SELLING OUT. DOMINION'S PROHIBITIVE TAXATION. Pi cm Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, August. 29. (Received August 29, at 8.50 p.m.) Iho whole of Mr G. L. Stead's racing team at present in Australia, comprising nine horses, will be auctioned on September 10. Mr Stead told an interviewer that he had decided to relinquish racing for the time being. The taxation and other charges in the- dominion are so heavy that he considers that owners not receiving a fair run from the Government. further, a big team owner who i« anxious to see his horses run moist spend considerable time away from home. In Australia the conditions are different as all the big prizes are centred in Sydney and Melbourne, but in New Zealand the, prizes are scattered. WELLINGTON DEFEATS WAIRARAPA. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CARTERTON, August 2» The Wairarapa and Wellington representative hockey teams met at Carterton to-day in fine weather and on a dry ground. Wairarapa speedily attacked, but skilful work by the Wellington backs sent them back. Wairarapa ctftne again and from a melee in the circle, •W. Bannin shot the first goal. Play continued even, till just-on the call of half-time O'Brien (Wellington) shot wide at goal and the ball struck Hawken's (Wairarapa.) pads, bounded off and entered the net. At a meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Hockey Association a letter was received from the English Hockey Association stating that the leading university players in England would not be able to spare the necessary time to join the proposed tour of an English team-to New Zealand, and us a consequence the English Association regretted that the tour could not take place. Mr H. Norton (manager of th.e New Zealand representative team which is touring Australia) wrote giving a lengthy report of the team's doings. He gave high praise to the team for its conduct both on and off the field. The New Zealanders had been given a wonderful reception in Sydney.' The only complaint he had to make was concerning the night travelling in trains, which was trying to the travellers, especially in view of the large number of matches played. The standard of play in Australia had improved greatly, and the game had received a decided stimulus as the result of the tour. SOUTHLAND v. EASTERN DISTRICT. (Pee United Press Association.)
