Mr C. H. Breeze was elected a member of the Dunedin Stock Exchange yesterday. The Hon. John MacGregor, M.L.C., returned from Wellington by last night’s express froip the north. Dr Datta, who arrived yesterday in Auck land, has signified his willingness to accept the invitation of the Student Christian Union to bo _ the speaker at the annual students’ service to be held on Sunday, Septerhber 23. Mr C. H. Virtue arid Mrs Virtue, of Christchurch, are spending a few days in the city. Mr Virtue is an enthusiast in Sunday school work, being superintendent of the Ricoarton Sunday School and a member of the Methodist Dominion Sunday School Board. Mr Middleridge, of Durban, arrived yesterday on a brief business trip. He has for many years been president of the Durban Y.M.C.A.. and during the war period directed the splendid work done on behalf of the men from the Australian and New Zealand troopships en route for the front. He will leave again for the north this morning. . Mr J. D. Parker, who is transferring tho Provincial Hotel at Port Chalmers to Mrs N. M'Donald, was tho recipient of good wishes from a number of patrons yestcrda.v evening. The visitors, in presenting Mr and Mrs Parker with souvenirs of their stay at Port Chalmers, referred to the unfailing courtesy extended to guests, and concluded with hearty expressions of esteem and goodThe death has occurred at Ashburton of Dr Ronald Volekman, aged 65, who for some time past has been associated with the 'Government Life Insurance Department. At one time Mr Volekman had an extensive practice at Rangiora, and he had also practised in Australia. He was known as a sldlled surgeon, having studied medicine with Sir Frederick Treves. The Rev. Graham H. Balfour, late minis ter of First Church, who is at present visiting Groat Britain, states In a letter to Dunedin friends that Mrs Balfour and ho have had an interesting motor tour through Scotland from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dundee. Tho latest news was from’ Oxford, where Mr Balfour had gone as a delegate to the International Missionary Conference. From Oxford visits had been made to Stratford-on-Avon. Kenilworth, Warwick Castle, etc. When the mail left Mr and Mrs Balfour were on tho evo of departure for London, en route for tho Continent, where Mr Balfour had been asked to represent the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the Pan-Presbyterian Conference in Zurich in tho end of July. Mr Balfour further stated that he was greatly enjoying the privilege of hearing many of the notable men in the Homeland.
