SHIPPING AT LYTTELTON.
For the first time for ’many ■' months all the available waterside labour has found employment to-day, there being no fewer than 13 steamers at Lyttelton, including six overseas vessels (says the Sun). The Railway Department is kept exceedingly busy supplying the necessary rolling stock. THE R.M.S. NIAGARA. The Royal Mail steamer Niagara arrived at Auckland from Vancouver, via ports, at 0 a.m. on Friday. After medical inspection the vessel berthed at the Queen’s wharf to disembark 162 passengers, and to unload mails and a quantity of general merchandise for New Zealand. Exceptionally fine weather was experienced on the voyage, which was uneventful. A large number of passengers joined the Niagara at Auckland, besides passengers transferred from the Marama. Cargo ■operations were completed by 10 p.m., when the vessel resumed her voyage to Sydney. THE TUTANEKAI. The Government steamer Tutanekai arrived at Auckland on Saturday morning from a tour of inspection of lighthouses on the East Coast, and berthed at the Queen’s wharf. The Tutanekai left Wellington on August 15, and visited all the lighthouses en route, and shifted the keepers. The voyage was uneventful with north-westerly and southwesterly winds for the most part. On Monday the steamer visited the Sandspit light and the othir buoys and beacons in tho Gulf. She will also go to Maloney’s Beef in the Rangitoto Channel in connection with the construction ot an iron beacon with a Concrete base. PAPABOA FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Paparoa, which arrived at Auckland from Liverpool on Thursday night, was berthed at the Queen’s wharf on Friday morning to disembark 282 passengers for New Zealand, and about 3000 tons of general merchandise. The Paparoa loaded a full cargo of general merchandise at Avonmouth, Glasgow, and Liverpool. The vessel cleared the last-named port on July 17. She arrived at Colon on July 24, and cleared Balboa on July 26. Fine weather was experienced on the voyage, until about three days from Now Zealand, when the conditions became somewhat boisterous. On Thursday, however, the weather again' became fine, and continued so to port. Captain F, Ashworth is in command of the Paparoa, and has with him the following officers: —Chief, Mr A. E. Lellington; second, Mr A. E. Taylor; third, Mr Hopkins;, fourth, Mr Butler; chief engineer, Mr Posgate. From Auckland tho Paparoa will proceed about to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin to complete discharge.
