A prisoner named Thomas William Ellis, who was being conveyed from Invercargill to Paparua Gaol, escaped at the Christchurch railway station on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon Constable Miller, of Papanui, rang the Christchurch, police station stating that a man answering the description of Ellis had passed through Papanui in a taxi-cab going north. Constables were sent out by a taxi-cab and found Ellis at the Pier Hotel, Kaiapoi. Ellis is serving a sentence of five years for forgery. The police consider that he has friends in Christchurch, as_ he was able to pay for the taxi V) Kaiapoi.
