THE ST. CLAIR BEACH.
■ TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— Referring to your sub-leader in Saturday’s issue relating to the removal of sand from St; Clair beach, I wish to-correct an obvious misunderstanding. My statement at the St. Kilda Council.meeting that I know of no municipal law to prohibit the removal of sand from the beach referred to private lands in the borough which are part of a sandhill. These private lands Were ilffe subject of discussion at the time. I was not referring to the area under the jurisdiction of the Domain Board, which has ample power to stop such action. The City Council, the St. Kilda Council, and the Domain Board are now taking legal advice. If there is no existing law to stop, individuals from weakening Nature’s safeguard and thus endangering people’s lives and property, then the sooner legislation in that direction is placed on the Statute Book the hotter. The lowest-lying part of St Kilda is below high-water mark. A volcanic action even in a distant part of the ocean may at any time cause an unprecedented tidal wave. A breach in the sandhills under such conditions would result in dire calamity.—l am, etc., C. Todd.
